Tomorrow, Jan 1, is a great sale at Fabricland. 50% off everything plus other in-store specials. The only catch is you have to be a member. Memberships cost something like $20, so it makes sense to go if you're going to spend more than $40 - very easy to do.
They are open 11am - 5 pm.
Happy Shopping.

Christie crackers $1.69. Liesel, this is lower than your benchmark
Mars and twix bars $.49 each. Liesel, have you used up all the ones you bought earlier this year
McCain premier pizza 2 pk $5.99. That's $3.00 each
Charmin Extra strong toilet paper $5.77/16 double rolls. If anyone has ever used this brand, let me/us know if it's worth buying. It's $.36/roll. My benchmark is anything less than $.50/roll.
Jamieson vitamins and supplements 1/2 price
red globe grapes $.97/lb
cucumbers $.97 a
onions $.98/3 lb bag
mandarin oranges $4.88/9 lb box. That's $.54/lb. Or equivalent to $2.71/ 5 lb box
That's all I have. I apologize for not keeping up this topic of the blog. I haven't had time to shop and so really haven't even looked at the flyers and determine what's been out there. So, don't give up on me. I will get back in the groove.
I will be going out to NoFrills tomorrow, so if you need only a couple of items, give me a shout before noon. If you want to go out with me, same thing, call me and we'll go together.
Have a great week.
One last thing,
If you bought a STUP book, don't forget to use the Co-op grocery coupons.
And I still have Sobeys gift cards if you have used up the ones you got before or if you thought you missed out. They don't expire, so don't worry about that.

Odds & Ends
Walmart - some okay deals, if you like what I do.
Aylmer canned tomatoes $1. I've been buying crushed and adding a can of diced and my own spices for pasta sauce. Way less sodium.
Campbell's RTE soup, Uncle Ben's Fast & Fancy Rice or Italpasta 900g $1
Oreos 550g (I think that's the bigger bag) $2.77
Breyer's Ice Cream $2.97
Clover Leaf tuna skip jack (170g) or flavoured (78-85g) $0.87. I buy the flavoured with the easy open top and take it for lunch with crackers or bread instead of buying a lunch on those crazy days.
Michael's - coupon in the flyer for 25% off your entire purchase, just on Thursday though.
This Friday is Black Friday in the states and I've noticed that there have been some good deals here the past few years, so check your flyers for sure if you want something big for Christmas like a Cricut.
And on a different note, I like to bake and I like to play. If anyone wants to kill two birds with one stone by coming to my house to do some Christmas baking and have our kids play, give me a shout. I'm doing shortbread, nuts n bolts and maybe some other things. I want to try bread but have to buy unexpired yeast first.

Costco
I was at Costco today and noticed:
Ellingson white flour $5.95 (or something like that) for 10KG!!!
Ghiradelli chocolate brownie mix $4.99 this box makes 4 8x8 pans. Basically $1.25 a pan plus the cost of an egg. Nice.
They also had Carter's 3 piece outfit (sweater, onesie and pants) for $9.99 - great price for shower gifts or if your little one needs some clothes.
In other news,
we didn't get our ads, so, the only specials I can report on are:
Bananas $0.48/lb at superstore (usually $0.68)
Cake Mixes $0.99 at No Frills
Happy Shopping

JoAnn's Grocery Pick for the week
I've had a chance to view NoFrills flyer and many of the 1/2 price deals have been carried over to next week. So if you missed out, you have another chance. I will most likely be going out, so give me a shout, we can go together, or if you trust me, I can pick up what you need.
Sobeys - 15% Tuesday coming up, but it's rather weak.
mandarins 5 lb box $3.49 $2.97 with discount That's $.59/lb
Pizza pops 4/box $1.99 $1.69 with discount That's $.42 each. I refuse to pay more than $.50 each.
Kelloggs cereal $4.00/box $3.40 with discount. Not the best price out there, but if you buy 3 boxes, you receive a jug of milk free. That makes a difference to your overall cost.
General mills cereal same price as above, so if you like this kind better, however, no free milk
Hunt's pasta sauce $1.29 $1.09 with discount. Again, it is often $1.00, but this is close.
head lettuce $.99 each $.84 each
colored peppers $2.49/lb $2.11/lb with discount. This is usually ok, but NoFrills has me spoiled with a bag of 4 for only $1.47. That's less than $.75/lb for reds.
Don't forget:
Milk $3.97 $3.37 with discount
eggs $1.97/doz $1.67 with discount
butter $2.97 $2.52 with discount
That's it - except for the 3-day-only specials:
asparagus $1.99/lb
chicken legs (drums and thighs together) $1.29/lb or $2.84/kg
Superstore - $25 gift card with $250 purchase
NN ice cream $3.98
NN soups $3.98/case of 12 That's $.33/can)
Asparagus $1.96/lb Same as Sobeys, but for the whole week
onions $.96/3lb bag
NN milk powder $19.98 The regular price is $23.98 so a good chance to add to your food storage.
NN club pack cereals $3.99. Limit of $3.99

Sport Chek
Check out their paper or on-line ad, they have a bunch of things 1/2 price until Monday Nov 1 including running and hiking shoes for $50, a really nice looking columbia 3-in-1 winter jacket for $149.99 reg $300, etc. Good deals to be had.

Update on NoFrills
I was out at NoFrills (sorry if I didn't invite any of you to go with me - I may go out again before the week is out)

Campbells soup $.47/can
Duncan Hines cake mixes $.99 This has been going for quite some time - no idea for how much longer.
Salmon fillets $3.97/lb or $8.80 If this sounds like a lot, remember that there is no waste.
Imperial Marg. 1.36kg tub $2.97. Still

JoAnn's Grocery Pick for the week
First things first.
Sobey's has a 3 day sale (Fri-Sun) and hamburger is $1.79/lb That's a decent price if you need to stock up. Fresh pineapple is $1.79 each and Christie crackers are $1.69. (I'm not a connoisseur so Superstore brand works for me and they are typically $1.50 and sometimes $1.25, but to each his own).
Save-on has a few bargains this week.
Also 3 days only (Fri-Sun) Cauliflower for $.99 each
The rest of the week:
onions 3lb bag $1.00
mandarins 5lb box $3.99
tomatoes $.99/lb
green peppers $.99/lb
romaine lettuce $.99 ea
Crush pop 2L $1.00
Superstore also has a few bargains
Free mini DVD player with purchase of $250.00
Fresh chicken drums or thighs (thighs have a better meat/bone ratio) $1.78/lb $3.92/kg
Cottonelle toilet paper (the soft stuff) 24 double rolls $9.97 limit 4
tortilla wraps 2/$4.00 But if you catch them at McGavins Bread Basket, they are only $1.00
sugar snap peas $5.98 (yum)
mandarins 9lb box $6.88. This is essentially the same price at Save-on's for the smaller box
NN soda crackers $2.98 for the big box
Delissio frozen pizza $4.97 limit of 6
Crest toothpast 5/$5.00
Exact "Q-tips" 5/$5.00
Blistex lip balms 5/$5.00
And now for the most exciting of all - NoFrills 1/2 off week
Fresh chicken breast $1.87/lb or $4.12/kg That would be $17.00 for the box of frozen boneless skinless fillets. Here you get the bone, but the flavor and texture is far superior
Pork loin - same price as above. If you will recall a month ago the price was $1.00/lb. But that was an anomoly and we should not expect that price anytime in the near future
Bluewater fish fillets $1.69/300g box. It is the smaller box, but if you calculate the price for the 700g box, it would calculate to $3.83 and it's the higher quality fillets. (not the minced fish)
Ricotta cheese $1.79/tub
spartan apples $2.24/5lb bag ($.45/lb)
cantaloupe $.99
pears 6lb bag $3.49 $.58/lb
grape tomatoes $1.49/pint
red peppers 4/bag $1.47
McCain pizza $3.64
Unico pasta 900g $.99 ea
Soy Beverage 1.89L $1.64 (that would be $3.47 4L of milk at this price)
Michelina's frozen entrees $.88 ea
Alaskan pollock fillets 680g package $2.99
Vector cereal and other Kelloggs $2.13

McGavin's Bread Basket
Friday Oct 29 - customer appreciation day save 20% off everything.
I buy the day-old bread/bagels/buns etc 10 for $10 so with 20% that means only $8 or $0.80 per item - pretty good price. If you don't have room in your freezer, go with a friend.
Also, today they had a bunch of buns (hamburger, hot dog, kaiser) for $1.25 but, buy one get one free, so that's like, um, 62.5cents a package (did the math in my head, hope it's right).
If you haven't been before, it's on the north end, east side of gaetz just before the lights at 77th street.

DO YOU HAVE YOUR TURKEY YET?
I just got a coupon in the mail for Sobeys. $.69/lb for turkey. But alas, it's only good till this Sunday. So if anyone wants it - it's yours. But you better call me, don't post it as I may not see it. If you call while I'm at the Farmers market tomorrow, be sure to leave a message and then call back around 2 pm to double check that I received it. I'd like someone to use this, so don't be shy.

No Frills + Superstore
No Frills
strawberries $1.77/ 1lb
bartlett or bosc pears $0.97/lb
mars bars $0.49 (I think someone out there is trying really hard to get me fat)
Pork tenderloin $2.97/lb (cryovac 2 pack) - this doesn't JoAnn's definition but the flyer states that it's half-price
broccoli $0.67/bunch. I could eat this stuff all day, every day. I really like it with (low-fat) cheese sauce and I've been adding paprika to spice it up - yummy.
black diamond cheese strings 16 pk $3.99 (save $2.88)
Chapman's frozen yogurt $3.99 for 500mL (pricy, but if you're on a diet and want something healthier than ice cream that still tastes good, this is a good choice)
McCain Premeire Traditional crust pizza $3.99 (save $1)
Superstore
$25 gift card with $250 purchase (Oct 8-11)
NN cheese $7.98 for 907g (reg $9.98), limit 2
cantaloupe $1.46 each
Harvest Crunch, Life, Corn Bran squares (RD choice for high fibre and okay tasting), oatmeal squares (taste better, less fibre), cap'n crunch (NO fibre), $2.99, reg $4.98 limit 2

flyer coupons
save $2 on Cover Girl cosmetics
save $5 on select Hasbro games (monopoly, guess who, connect 4, operation, twister, clue, battleship, pictureka, scrabble (I hate that game), candy land, hungry hungry hippo) PLUS they are already 25% off
bartlett pears $4.98 for 6lbs (better than No Frills, but I can't eat that many pears)
That's all for today. I just realized that there may be other deals but I often don't list them because I filter everything through a dietitian's eye first. If they aren't too healthy, I'll usually put a disclaimer. Eat a salad with your pizza instead of 1/2 a pizza. much better for you :)

black diamond cheese strings 16 pk $3.99 (save $2.88)
Chapman's frozen yogurt $3.99 for 500mL (pricy, but if you're on a diet and want something healthier than ice cream that still tastes good, this is a good choice)
McCain Premeire Traditional crust pizza $3.99 (save $1)
Superstore
$25 gift card with $250 purchase (Oct 8-11)
NN cheese $7.98 for 907g (reg $9.98), limit 2
cantaloupe $1.46 each
Harvest Crunch, Life, Corn Bran squares (RD choice for high fibre and okay tasting), oatmeal squares (taste better, less fibre), cap'n crunch (NO fibre), $2.99, reg $4.98 limit 2
apple juice $0.97 1L
flyer coupons
save $2 on Cover Girl cosmetics
save $5 on select Hasbro games (monopoly, guess who, connect 4, operation, twister, clue, battleship, pictureka, scrabble (I hate that game), candy land, hungry hungry hippo) PLUS they are already 25% off
bartlett pears $4.98 for 6lbs (better than No Frills, but I can't eat that many pears)
That's all for today. I just realized that there may be other deals but I often don't list them because I filter everything through a dietitian's eye first. If they aren't too healthy, I'll usually put a disclaimer. Eat a salad with your pizza instead of 1/2 a pizza. much better for you :)

JoAnn's Grocery Pick for the week
As Liesel said, not much worth mentioning. But I'll list what Sobey's has that may be worth it for Discount Tuesday. And here comes the sales pitch - the Sobey's gift cards are now on sale. (I'm talking Travis' fundraiser of Sobey's Gift Cards) This is great for you since you are getting full value for your dollar. You pay $25 and receive a gift card for $25. It's valid anytime and at any Sobey's and never expires. Travis would be very happy for your orders. As I mentioned in an earlier post to the blog, he is going to Greece with the Design Studies class and this is one of their fundraisers. Unfortunately, they won't be ready for pick up by this Tuesday. I tried to suggest that, but the committee wasn't sure we should sell them so soon. Sorry.
Sobeys I'm focusing on Tuesday prices. So my comments relate to Tuesdays and not to the rest of the week.
Turkey $.99/lb $.84/lb Yes, Liesel this is a good price, especially on Tuesday. I make it a rule to never pay more than $.99/lb for turkey, but I also make it a rule to try to get it for free at Superstore.
Compliments ham $1.99/lb or $4.39/kg $1.69/lb or $3.73/kg I'm not sure if this is an old fashioned with the bone in, or the boneless style. But if you look at the price/kg, you will realize that if you were buying this in the deli, it would be selling for $.37/100. when was the last time you bought luncheon meat, especially ham for that price!!
Black Diamond cheese $4.99/500g $4.24/500g If you missed out on the awesome price the last 2 weeks at Walmart on Armstrong cheese, you could pick up some of this. It would be equal to $7.63 for the 908g blocks.
sour cream 500 ml tub $1.99 $1.69 I usually buy the 1L tub at Superstore for around $3.25 This would be $3.38 and you can have a smaller container open at a time, extending the fridge life.
broccoli $.99 $.84
yams $.49/lb $.41 Makes spectacular pumpkin pie!!
pears $.99/lb $.84/lb
red potatoes $4.99 $4.24 Their potatoes are good quality. You could get a couple of bags at this price and they'd keep for at least a month.
baby carrots, 2lb bag $1.99 $1.69
Tray buns $3.49/24 $2.97/24 That's $1.50/doz and their bakery makes good stuff. Just usually rather expensive
General Mills jumbo size cereal $4.99 $4.24
Life cereal $3.49 $2.96
Then, while you are there collecting your 15% off, pick up eggs, milk and butter at Walmart's lower price + 15%. Works for me.
Have a good week and happy shopping.

Deals this week - not so much
So I discussed it with JoAnn - there are not many earth-shatter deals this week, so check the flyers if you're looking for something specific.
Superstore has it's $25 gift card with $250 purchase and it's 10%/15% Tuesday on the 5th for the other stores.
Hmm, turkey for $0.99/lb. Is that good? I'll contribute the spices if someone wants to invite me over for dinner.

JoAnn's Grocery Pick for the week
NoFrills
This week is not that great, but I shall list what I see. There a few carry overs from last week and a few new ones. If you didn't get the pork loin for $1.00/lb, I am sorry. It's not offered this week.
Sirloin tip roast $2.00/lb That's not the lowest it's been, but if you are low in stock, I'd go for it.
Cantaloupe $1.00 ea
Grapes - red or green $1.00/lb
Green peppers 4/pkg $2.00
MacIntosh apples $3.00/5lb bag ($.60/lb)
Chicken thighs - fresh $2.00/lb Not spectacular, but will do.
McCain fries 1kg bag $1.00
Deodorant $2.00

Benchmark Baking Prices
Liesel had a request for what's a good price for baking needs. So I'll try to cover most of it. Always compare bulk to packaged. It's not always cheaper one way or the other. Depends on the current sales. You can always store your bulk or larger opened packages in airtight containers, such as Tupperware or Rubbermaid and it will keep just fine. If anyone thinks of anything else, feel free to add.
Flour under $6.00/bag
Sugar under $9.00/bag ( 25 lb bag - or 10kg for the younger generation)
Brown Sugar around $3.00/bag (2 lb)
Icing Sugar around $2.00/bag (1 lb)
Cream Cheese under $2.30/brick
Sweetened Condensed milk under $2.00/can
Whipping cream just over $3.00/L Keeps for a 6-8 weeks
almonds under $1.00/100g in bulk. Watch SStore for 1kg bags for under $10.00/bag
Pecans/walnuts under $1.30/100g in bulk. Watch SStore for 1kg bags for under $13.00/bag
Raisins under $.40/100g in bulk.
Lard (for the best pie crust) under $1.20/lb
Pie filling Sstore sells their NName for under $2.50 quite frequently. In fact I have bought it for $1.99. I find it is just as good and the cherry is even better than EDSmith. That's my opinion for what it's worth. However, the best cherries come off Sheila's tree!! But that's a trade secret.
Chocolate chips under $.70/100g for milk chocolate chips and $.50 for regular
Dipping Chocolate under $1.00/100g If you pay less than that, you are getting a lot of wax mixed in it, therefore poorer quality.
Coconut under $.50/100g
Baking Powder This is unfamiliar to me. I buy the 5kg pail from the Wholesale and keep the lid on tight. It lasts for year. Sorry if this is of no help.
Vanilla This is a thorn in my side. Over the years I have been spoiled with pure vanilla from Mexico. If you haven't experienced the difference, you just haven't lived. And to top it off, it's usually around $10/GALLON!! Now, don't we pay about $24/L? That would be the equivalent of $100/gallon. So you see why I get peeved with the vanilla here. So any of you out there who frequents Mexico, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know. I would love to get some of the good stuff.
Brick Margarine Don't be fooled by the 1lb blocks. I buy the 1/4 lb squares sold in the 3lb box. When on sale, SStore brand is $2.29. That's a little over $.70/lb. Try getting that price in the 1lb blocks. And the 1/4 lb squares are so handy. Just remember that 1/4 lb is a 1/2 cup of marg.
Eggs Continue to enjoy the widespread price of $1.97/doz. Keep in mind too that on discount Tuesday, they are even cheaper at Sobey's.
That's all I that comes to mind. If I think of more, I'll post it.
Some Deals
Walmart
mostly the same as last week,

Starfrit lock and lock food storage 50% off
Pampers giant pack $17.97
Crock Pot slow cooker, 5 qt $28
Armstrong cheese $5.97 for 750g
Mott's fruitsation sauces 6 pack $1.47 (great deal, usually $3 regular)
Hunt's Snack pack puddings 12 pack $2.47
Cloverleaf skipjack tuna $0.88
Superstore
Tide laundry detergent 9.97, reg 15.97
Haagen Daaz $4.97 for 500ml ( think this would be a splurge, but if you've got a habit to feed . . . )
Bear Paws cookies or crackers $2
Dare Simple pleasures cookies $1.97
Olay, Gilette, Old Spice Zest or Ivory body wash $2.99
Degree antipersperant $1.49
Herbal Essences shampoo $1.99
TreSemme or Head&Shoulders $3.99
Photolab - if you order 100 prints, 10cent prints. I like to save up printing my pics for deals like these. Costco should be having their 12cent print sale (no minimums in Nov I think)
Ziggy's int'l roast beef deli meat $0.97/100g (club pack)
Fall Baking needs - JoAnn will be posting soon about good prices for baking since Christmas is coming, but here are a few this week
flour $5.98 10kg good price
ED smith pie filling $3.97 - JoAnn says noname is just as good and half the price FYI
Whole Almonds $9.98 for 1kg
pecan halves $12.98 for 1kg (maybe not the best deal, but buy sooner than later to ensure you have what you want on hand when you start your baking. I mean, really, don't you all have urges to make candied pecans at random times?)
condensed milk $1.99 - very good, usually $3 a can
mcCain frozen pizza $3.99
PC frozen orange juice $1
GM cheerios $1.98
Here's another tidbit about superstore (and probably most other stores) - just because it's in the ad, does not mean the item is on sale. They will often have items at regular price in the ads. I believe that companies pay big money to have their products placed in these weekly flyers. Know your prices so that you don't get sucked in by a pretty picture ad and then see it at a better price later.
Happy shopping.

Fundraiser update
Monday is the last day to purchase tickets to the Spaghetti Dinner at Smitty's. As mentioned last week, it's all you can eat spaghetti (2 sauces, red or white), garlic toast and Ceasar salad. Cost is $20/plate, with almost 50% going to the students. There will be door prizes and a silent auction as well. Travis has the tickets and would be happy to sell them to you. Almost forgot - Saturday, September 25 is the eat-date.
Thanks
sobey's gift cards start in another week.
Collicut passes. All booklets are $25 each and contain 3-12 passes, depending on the age or if they are family passes. It amounts to nearly 50% off the regular price and they never expire. Great for occasional use or gift ideas.
We are also running Tupperware, Everyday Style, and Avon. So, if any of this interests you, we would be happy to accommodate.
Until next week, . . .

Fundraising support - Anyone
Travis is going to Greece this spring with the Design Studies class. (I`m so jealous, especially since they are not even taking parent chaperones!!)
They are organizing several fundraisers. If anyone is interested in any of these, please let me know. Travis and I would be most grateful.
Spaghetti Dinner - All you can eat spaghetti with your choice of tomato or Alfredo sauce, garlic toast and Ceasar salad and beverage. Saturday, October 25. This is the same evening as the RS Broadcast, so I`m thinking that those "poor" husbands left at home could come and eat their hearts out. Tickets are on a pre-sell basis only, so give us a call to get your tickets. There will be door prizes to be won as well.
Sobeys Gift Cards - These are used either by yourself to pay for groceries or to use as gifts for family or friends. Also, they would make very nice Christmas gifts for employees or valued customers. They are available in denominations of $25, $50, or $100. The cost to you is no more than the face value of the card. IE If you want a $50 gift card, you pay $50. Sobeys rebates back to the student a percentage of the total sales. That is how the student makes their money. You are not out any money and if you already shop at Sobeys, then it`s a win - win. We will be running this in the next few weeks and will continue through December for those looking to purchase for Christmas gifts.
Collicut Passes - I do not have the details, but the basic premise is if you do not buy monthly passes because you visit the Collicut on an occasional basis, you can save nearly 50%!! There are single or family passes available and good news - the Collicut does not restrict the definition of a family. So our large families are not penalized. I will have prices within the week.
Tupperware - With Michele out of the business, you may not have replaced your consultant. If you want any tupperware in the next month, I can get you a catalogue. Travis will receive a percentage of the sales.
On another note, Candace, is selling SUTP (as is almost every other student) for credits toward her choir fees. She has joined the famed LTCHS choir and they have a variety of fundraisers, this being one of them. The books are $20 again this year and have some very useful coupons. She also has access to Calgary and Edmonton books if you have family or friends who live in these cities. So if you have not already been bombarded by your own kids wanting to sell the books, let us know.
I have no idea how many people read this blog, so even if these fundraisers don`t"float your boat", perhaps you know someone who may be interested. I will take the opportunity to thank you now for supporting my kids in their endeavors. I realize this is an expensive time of year, so we truly thank you.
If you need to contact me, you can either send me an email joannlynn"telus.net( the text is not cooperating, so the "at"symbol is registering as a quotation mark. Hopefully you are smarter than I can read this email address) or call 403 346 8328.

Math Tips
Here's a math trick for the nine times tables, if you don't already know it. Say you have the question 9 x 3. With all fingers on both hands up, count 3 fingers from the left and put down the 3rd finger (it would be the left hand middle finger) Now you have 2 fingers up on the left side and 7 fingers up after the split so the answer is 27.
Try another one - 9 x 6 , from the left count over to 6 fingers and put it down (it would be the right hand thumb) now you have 5 fingers on the left hand up and 4 fingers after the split, so the answer is 54.
If it doesn't quite make sense ask me or one of my girls and they can show you. Hope that helps someone!!

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week
I'm getting an early start this week. I must point out that both Sobeys and Superstore flyers begin on Fridays now, not Saturdays. This adds to Canadian Tire and Zellers which have always begun on Fridays.
Superstore This week they are featuring 2 "deals"
1. spend $250 and get a Rubbermaid container set free (valaue $29.99)
2. Saturday and Sunday save double the GST on all purchases
So, I'll list some of the electronics that are featured. Just in case you want to take advantage of the double GST savings.
Wii console $149.99
Sony Bravia 46" LCD tv $999.99
Sony progressive scan DVD $44.99
Garmin 255W GPS $159.99
Sony cybershot 14mp camera $149.99 (red, black or silver only)
Of course any other non-food purchases will also be reduced by double the GST (10%)
Roseart pencil crayons 24 pk $.79
Down under shampoo or conditioner 1L bottle $2.50
Cottonelle toilet paper (the soft stuff) $5.97/12 double rolls
Dial body wash $3.00
Lean hamburger $1.78/lb or $3.92/kg
NN frozen entrees $.80
NN perogies $2.88/2kg bag
Kaiser buns $1.89/doz
PC crisp thins crackers $1.25/box
NN soda crackers $1.50/box
Neilson yogurts 3/$1.00
grapes, red or green $.96/lb
peaches $.77/lb again this week
pears $.98/lb
whole mushrooms $1.99/lb pkg
zucchini $.78/lb
broccoli $.96 ea
NoFrills
Delissio pizza $3.47 (I think this is the kind you like Liesel)
Eye of round roast $1.77/lb or $3.90/kg This will redeem myself from the great faux pas from last week. I put in the sirloin tip roast at Save-on from an expired flyer. But this is $.22 cheaper and a better cut. So, I hope I'm back in the good books. Thanks NoFrills.
Schneiders sausage, beef burgers and a few other packaged meats 400-450g $1.67. I'm not familiar with these products, but at $.40/100g it's worth investigating.
Huggies Mega diapers (40-84's) $9.97 Is this a good price? I'm a bit out of touch these days.
Body Wash (Olay, Ivory, Gillette and Old Spice) $2.97
Some items carried over from last week:
Fresh chicken breast $2.36/lb or $5.20/kg This is a bit more than my target price, but if you are running low, you can get some to tie you over till a better price comes along.
PC chicken strips or nuggets $9.49/2kg box
frozen wild salmon fillets $3.77/lb
Campbell's ready to eat soups $.94 each
Wonder buns $.95/doz
Kellogg's cereals $2.47
Nestle water 24pk $1.97
Kraft spreadable cream cheese $2.79
Unico Pasta $.94 each
Blueberries $1.17/pint
Fanta, A&W root beer, Crush pop 2L $.95
Sobeys Tuesday's 15% discount days. I'll list the flyer price and then Tuesday's price with 15%
grapes, red, green or black $.99/lb $.84/lb
unsliced bread 4pk $3.99 $3.39 or $.85/loaf
pork ribs $1.99/lb $1.69/lb
Bulk wieners - regular or BBQ $1.69/lb $1.43/lb (that's $.32/100g)
Imperial Marg 3lb tub or squares $2.99 $2.54 So if you didn't stock up when it was $2.99 at NoFrills, here's an even better chance
Colgate 2/$3.00 2/$2.55 That's $1.27 each 75-130 mL tube
Oops. I just found a better price for colgate. $.99 at Zellers (but according to the flyer, only the 75 mL tubes)
Don't forget to get milk, and eggs while on your Tuesday trip and capitalize on your savings.
Zellers
Jim and Amy, tuna (truly brand) $.69 Getting better.
Purex 30-50 rolls $9.99 Friday and Saturday only
Canned Mushrooms $.50/can Friday and Sat. only
Mr. Doudas par boiled or chinese rice 8 kg bag $5.99. I am not familiar with this particular brand, but it is a good price. I usually buy the 18 kg bag for $26. The above price would be only $13.50 for an 18 kg bag. Friday and Sat only.
Canadian Tire
46 piece plastic storage $9.99 (reg $24.99) Skip trying to purchase $250 at Superstore. This looks just as good and has more pieces.
Need new cookware? KitchenAid 10 piece set, with bonus frying pan. $118.79 (70% off)
I'm going to try the solar light set - Stainless steel 10 pk for $29.99 (reg $89.99) I'll let you know what I think.
Need a second freezer, or just in the market for your first? This Danby 7 cu. ft. chest freezer is a decent price at $249.99
How about a 2-in-1 car seat? 22-80 lbs. Converts to a booster seat. Reg $159.99 $99.96
garbage bags $1.97/box of 40 Saturday only
Glad zip lock sandwich bags $.99 Saturday only
Anyone used an Infinity vacuum? Is it made by Dyson? It looks like it has the same cyclone set-up. I'd like a "true consumer report" if anyone has one to share.
Purex toilet paper 24 single rolls $4.99. I do believe this is the same equivalent as the big pkg at Zellers. Pretty close anyway.
I don't have the rest of the flyers yet, so I'll try to get them posted soon.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week
Thanks Liesel for posting your picks. Here a couple more.
Sobeys
corn on the cob 6/$1.68 I got some on Saturday and it was delicious. Very tender.
Co-op
Harmonie flour $5.99. This may not seem noteworthy since it is not brand name, but just to make you aware - worldwide there is a bit of an impending wheat shortage. Russia is in a drought, there has been extensive hail in North America and wheat prices have gone up significantly. So, this is the best you are going to see for a while. However, if you have enough flour to last you through the next growing season, don't worry about it. For me, flour at $5.99 is a good buy if you need to stock up to see you through this temporary "shortage"
Delmonte juice pouches $1.99/10pouch box
NoFrills
Highliner wild salmon fillets $3.77/lb
PC chicken strips or nuggets $9.49/2kg box wow
Pillers sliced ham $1.99/250g (that's $.80/100g)
English cukes $.69
green peppers 4 pack $1.77
Wonder buns $.95/dozen
Old Dutch liquid laundry detergent 50 load jug $1.99
Maple Leaf flakes of ham, chicken or turkey $.99/can
Superstore
green or red leaf lettuce (I know you like this lettuce Luella) $.68
watermelon $3.97
Pork loin half cut into chops $1.98/lb or $4.37/kg
pogo's $8.97/box of 20
Upper crust 16" pizza 2/$14 If anyone has ever tried these pizza (they are located in the deli) let me know. I'd like to know if they are any good.
Soft and Dry antipersperant $1.00
Lypsyl lif balm $1.00
I think that's all the damage I can do for this week. Happy shopping. Next week is discount days at Sobeys, Save-on, Safeway, Nutters.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week
It seems my brain has been on vacation. So, I'm trying to get back on the wagon and post my picks for the week. Thanks Liesel for picking up the slack. However, all the posts from the past are archived, so if you have access to the week's flyers, you can always go back and compare prices to what I have posted in the past. I'm happy to help, and I hope that eventually you will all be self-sufficient in recognizing good prices for your own specific needs.

Mars Bars Squares
Since I know you have been stocking up on Mars bars this summer when they're on sale, here is the long awaited recipe.
4 Mars bars, cut into pieces
1/2 cup butter/marg (I would do a little less, maybe 1/3 cup?)
3 cups Rice Krispies
melt Mars and butter slowly over low heat. Once all melted, remove from heat and stir in Rice Krispies. Press into 9x9" pan and let cool. Cut into 1x1" squares (very rich, very unhealthy but very tasty)
Optional: melt 1/4 cup butter with 1 cup chocolate chips slowly over low heat or microwave for 1-2 minutes and stir well. Spread over cooled base and refridgerate to set.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week
Oops! I guess I could justify my lack of posting on the lack of good deals, but that's just lame. However, there isn't much to report this week. 15% day was a non-event, Superstore has precious little, and NoFrills has a few things, so I guess I'll just post that and hope for something more exciting for next week.
Incidentally, Jen, if you are still in the dark, NoFrills is Superstore's small town version. It only has grocery and pharmacy items. No clothing or dry goods. But their prices are great. There is one in Sylvan, Lacombe and Olds. So if you are ever interested, you can carpool or just put in your order. I usually go out there twice/month if the prices can lure me out. To make it even more enticing, the super Walmart is just down the street!! But no need 'cause NoFrills does a good job of matching their prices anyway.
NoFrills
grapes $.97/lb
watermelon $3.47 each
broccoli $.79 each
cucumbers $.79 each
chicken drumstick or thighs $1.99/lb or $4.37/kg
NN smokies 1kg pkg $4.47 (Sobey's had a demo yesterday for smokies sliced, browned and slow-cooked in apricot jam, lemon juice and dijon mustard) It was delicious. I made it today and served it over rice. It was a hit. I added chopped veggies for a complete dinner.
Diana sauces $1.69
2 Pk McCain premier pizza $6.49 that's only $3.25/pizza (deluxe and pepperoni only)

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week
So, if you missed going out to NoFrills last week, you have another chance. Most of the sale items have been continued this week.
NoFrills
Pork loin, cut into chops, BONELESS. $1.77/lb or $3.90/kg I bbq these for my crew yesterday for under $5.00!!! They were very easy and no waste since they were boneless.
Ribs - same price as the chops
Pork tenderloin $2.50/lb Too pricey for me, but if you are looking for a choice cut of pork, boneless and no fat, this is the one for you. Comes 2/pkg
top sirloin steak $2.97/lb or $6.55/lb Steak is out of my league, but this is decent for steak
1L carton chocolate milk $.98 ea
Duncan Hines cake mix $.88 ea
Frozen juice - Five Alive $.64 (or Fruitopia, but it has too much sugar for me)
Campbell's soup $.47 (but Co-op has the 12 can case for $4.99 or $.41/can)
cantaloupe $.99 ea
blueberries $1.24/pint
mangoes $.49 ea
romaine hearts $1.14 bag of 3 This is for you Donna
red peppers bag of 4 only $1.49
I am going out this week, so if anyone wants me to pick up something, let me know. I can do that. Or if you want to hitch a ride, I can do that too.
Superstore - The free item is a $25 gift card for purchases over $250.
cherries $1.87/lb
tomatoes $.86/lb
corn on the cob 6/$1.68 ($.28/cob)
romaine lettuce $.56 each
mini wheats $2.99 (limit of 2)
Crispix (and other Kellogg's cereal) $2.99 (limit of 2) This is for you Travis
Kaiser or Italian buns $3.48/2 doz. That's under $.15 each
Safeway
If you are running low on boneless chicken breast, Safeway's price this week is $26.36. Limit of 2
Co-op
As I mentioned earlier, Campbell's soups by the case, $4.99 or $.41/can
canned mushrooms $.58 each
fresh salmon, whole $.29/100g When it's this price, I buy 10-12 and pressure can them. It is one of the easiest things to preserve. Simply cut the whole salmon (bones, skin and all) to the length of your jars, stuff the fish in the jar, add salt and finish filling with water. Seal and pressure cook according to canner's directions. I have a pressure canner if anyone wants to try this. All the instructions are in the box. I use wide-mouth pint jars (500mL for those of you who are metric). They are easiest to fill. I learned how to do salmon from working at the cannery.

Old Navy
I just got an email from Old Navy. It appears that kids clothes are on sale.
Khakis $10.00
Polo's $5.00
Then it says "and more" So I guess they have other stuff. Not sure what.
And my apologies. Serves me right for not proof reading. On the Grocery Picks, I mentioned that NoFrills had blueberries for a good price? But I failed to mention what that price was. It was $1.24/pint. If anyone normally buys blueberries, you can tell me if that is decent. This is the last day of this week's prices, but they may be on again next week. They tend to run some sales for more than a week. Hopefully if you wanted the blueberries, this will be the case. Again, sorry for omitting the price. It was not intentional.

Deals
Looking through flyers I see a 12 pack of water is on at sobeys for .99 cents. If you go onto Save.ca and order the coupons for glade sense and spray refills, you could get two of them for $3.00. Then if you take in the walmart flyer to london drugs to price match and then get the glade aerosols for $1.00 as well, spend $15.00 on glade products and use the $10.00 off coupon that was in July 10th newspaper and you'd have 7 aerosols plus two spray refills for $5.00. I'd say not bad, if you want to stock up on smelly stuff :)Another one is bug spray, go onto websaver.ca and order the two off coupons to use together. To make it even better if you use Deep Woods, go onto rightathome.ca and print off the deep woods buy one get one free and use all of them together to pay about $ 4.00 for two bottles of spray, if their around 10 bucks regular. Better Deal if you can find them on sale too and price match. Keep the mosquitos away!! I bought Miracle Whip for 4 something at costco today and now notice they've got it for 4.00 at walmart of 2 for $7.00 at safeway (you can also buy 1 for $3.50). What do ya know, I should of waited. 10 Kg of sugar is on for $8.99 at the co-op, missed it if it was on anywhere else. Kellogs Family size cereal is also $4.99 at the co-op. That's all I'll input for now. Happy shopping! Luella

Meat and fruit prices
I have had a request for benchmark prices on fresh meat. And fruit for canning. So here we go.
chicken: breast anything in the vicinity of $2.00/lb ($4.40/kg)
thighs same price
whole frying less than the above since you are paying for the bones. $1.80/lb max.
pork: loin, whole or cut into chops Under $2.00/lb ($4.40/kg)
steaks or shoulder roast. Less than above, around $1.80/lb
ribs - I have to admit that I rarely buy them. They are more for show than anything. You are paying for at least 50% bone. But I will buy country-style ribs or button bones. Counry-style ribs are like a pork chop without the eye in the center (just the bone with the meaty part around it). Button bones or riblets are the ends of the rib and are must more meaty. The bone portion is actually quite edible too. I price them in the same range as the other pork cuts.
beef:
hamburger - has been quite expensive lately. The best I have seen in the last 6 months is $1.79/lb ($3.97/kg) I don't like to spend more than $1.69/lb and most prefer $1.49/lb, which I haven't seen for over a year.
roast - Inside round or outside round. These are both boneless. Outside has more fat and generally is cheaper than inside. Eye of round is the best of all round roast and is the leanest. I consider any roast that breaks $5.00/kg is worth buying. Incidentally NoFrills has eye of round roast for $1.88/lb or $4.14/kg!!! Awesome. That in itself is worth the drive out to Sylvan.
Cross Rib roast is by far the best tasting and most tender of all roasts. But it is rarely less than $6.00/kg. Also watch - could be boneless or the ribs may still be in. Generally, if the long ribs are still in, they sell them as prime rib and jack the price at least double.
Sirloin - these roasts come from the hip and are the driest and least tender of all the roasts. They are best if slow-cooked in a marinade as for beef on a bun. But generally the price does not reflect the lesser cut. It is priced higher than round roast (cut from the shoulder)
Steaks - if you are a steak person and you are going to bbq from fresh (not frozen) round steak is more than adequate. Because they are lean, you get less flare up and no bone means even cooking. But if you are wanting to be extravigant, rib roasts are very tasty. (T-bone, cross rib, etc). WARNING: You will pay a premium for steaks vs roast, so if you have the means, buy a roast and cut into steaks yourself. You will save a lot of money. Or you could be like me and only cook roasts in the first place. Your portions are much smaller than when serving steak.
Hope that helps. I am by no means an expert, since I find I get into my own rut and buy the same cuts most of the time.
If there is an interest in fish, I can shed some light on that too.
Fruit:
For canning, you don't need to get your fruit at the Farmer's Market (did I say that?)
These days with refrigerated trucks and storage, the fruit is just as fresh, just as local, and generally cheaper.
peaches/nectarines $.75/lb or better. It's still early in the season and if the crop is good, then will fall below $.50/lb. Last week, Superstore had nectarines for $.77 and this week NoFrills has them. I much prefer to can nectarines over peaches. Their flavor and texture are similar, but no need to peel nectarines. Merely slice off the pit and you are away. If you are not sure if you will like them, at $.77 you could do a batch and see how you like them and then when the BC nectarines ripen later in the summer (and should be well-priced) you will know if you want peaches or nectarines. BC are ripe near the end of July
Apricots - not as plentiful as peaches or nectarines, but good canned. Should be able to get for less than $1.00/lb. Remember that the pit is small inside, so you are paying for mostly fruit.
Cherries are easy to do, but I am not a fan of the non-crunchy texture. As you know, cherries were $1.99 at Sobey's last week, plus the 15% discount. Was a great time to get some, but I suspect this won't be the last time this season. Cherries generally are available until late July.
Hope this helps.

Self-Sufficiency - Home Canning
I am going to attempt home canning this year. I'm thinking peaches, some type of jam and who knows what else. I will be buying some equipment and would love to learn with someone else. If you're interested, let me know and we can do it at my house (no mess for you to clean up!).
Liesel's meager pickings
Safeway - Lucerne ice cream 4L, $3.99, good deal
Superstore
$25 gift card if you spend $250 - you can combine two receipts from the same day, so go with a friend or ask the person in front of you for their receipt and re-imburse appropriately.

There are lots of others but Miss B is begging for attention. JoAnn - it's all up to you now :)

Women's used clothing.
Does anyone know of any used clothing for women besides Twice N Nice? I have a friend who is looking for a dress for a wedding and wants to find something nice but modest.
Let me know.

Clothing Sales
As per Kara's comment, Once Upon a Child is having a sale on 'selected clothing and toys' (I think it may just be clearance). The later in the day you shop, the better the discount, up to 70% off after 3pm.
Plato's clothing is just like Once Upon a Child but for teenagers/young adults and it just opened in the old Glory Lighting store in the same strip mall as OUAC. Might be worth checking out if you're of that age or have kids that age.
Mark's is having their Father's day event this Thursday evening. I'm assuming it will be 20% off everything, including sale items, but call to confirm. They also have a $10 off if you spend $50 which you can use with the discount. Byron got a pair of shoes at the last sale reg $100 for about $70 with both discounts.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week
It looks like Sobeys is the store of choice for this week. It's 15% Tuesday and with the discount, prices look pretty good.
Sobeys - Sale price followed by the additional 15% discounted price
Cherries (not that great, but with discount . . . well I'm a cherry fanatic, so anything that resembles a sale and I'm hooked) $2.49/lb $2.12/lb
Asparagus $1.99/lb $1.69/lb
head lettuce $.99 ea $.84 ea
Celery $1.29 ea $1.09 ea
Cantaloupe $1.49 ea $1.27 ea
Romaine hearts (if you like these better than the whole romaine head)
$2.49/pack of 3 $2.12 That's $.70/head
Mushrooms 200g pkg $1.99 ea $1.69 ea
bottled water $1.49/case of 12 $1.27/case
Note that this is the 12-bottle case, not the 24. The 24-case is $3.99. Hmmm. Do they think we are that easily fooled??!!!
Campbell's soup 12 cans/case $5.99 $5.09 That's $.42/can
Hams and Hots/doz $1.99 $1.69/doz
Pork ribs, breast bone removed $1.99/lb or $4.39/Kg $1.69/lb or $3.74/Kg
Chicken thighs $1.99/lb or $4.39/kg $1.69/lb or $3.74/kg
Whole frying chicken same price as the thighs above. Anyone taken the time to calculate how much weight is skin and bones in a fryer vs buying thighs or breast? I'd like to know which is more economical when the prices are the same.
Compliments smokies 1Kg pkg $6.99 $5.94
Fresh instore pizza starts at $6.99 starts at $5.94 Plus if you buy 2 pizzas,
you will receive 100 Club Sobeys points.
Kraft salad dressings 475 mL $1.99 $1.69 OR
Compliments salad dressings 475mL $1.89 $1.59
Frozen veggies 1 Kg bag $2.49 $2.12 Great if they carry petite peas

FREE 4L jug of milk with purchase ofany 3 Kelloggs Cereal. so here are some decent prices on Kelloggs cereal.
Family pack 500g - 1.35Kg $4.99 $4.24
Corn Flakes 210 - 750g $2.99 $2.55
NoFrills
Frozen boneless. skinless chicken breast $2.00/lb $4.41/kg That works out to less than $18.00 for a 4kg box that is normally sold. But I think the ones at NoFrills are in the 2kg bag. So that would be under $9.00/bag. Wow!
The rest of the prices are either the same or higher than the specials at Sobeys, especially if you shop on Tuesday. But if you miss Tuesday, then check out the prices for NoFrills and you may want to head out there.
Co-op Besides whatever they feature for $1.49Day, here is what's in the flyer
strawberries 4lb pkg $5.99. That's cheaper than frozen!!!
Purex toilet paper 12 double rolls $4.98 with coupon. But check out Canadian Tire, they have 24 double rolls for $8.98. Better, but if you like Royale better (it is softer in my opinion) Canadian Tire's is $4.99 for 24 single of 12 double rolls.
Speaking of Canadian Tire, Fleecy dryer sheets are $3.99 for 80 sheet box
Astro yogurt 650g tub 4/$5.00 That's $1.25/tub
Jello instant or cooked pudding $4/3.96($.99 each) Good to stock up since the regular price is usually around $1.39 or higher.
Superstore $25 gift card with $250 purchase. Remember that they will match prices, except 15% discounts.
red seedless grapes $1.38/lb
bagged iceberg or coleslaw bog 3 lb bag $2.48!!
NN smokies 1kg pkg $4.48 (regular $5.99) My big kids like the Mexican, but they're far too hot for me. I like the Polish.
Ok. Here's my confession. Last week, I bought sugar snap peas (for the first time in my life) at Sobey's at their Bogo event. They were the little 227g bags. Regular $3.79, so Bogo puts them at $1.90. I discovered it's my new indulgence. Better than chocolate by far. Sorry if I have offended you choc-aholics out there:) Anyway, to my surprise, the big bag is on sale at Superstore for $5.98 907g bag. That would mean that my little bags last week would be $1.50. Guess what I'm buying at Supertore this week. I've bought the other peas before, but the sugar snap are to die for!!
Back to business:
Skim milk powder 2.5kg bag (makes 25L milk) $19.98. That's nearly $5.00 of the regular price. Great for food storage. I use it in my bread recipe
canned pineapple $.80 each
canned tuna 6cans/$4.48 That's nearly $.75/can, but if you are running low and can't wait till it's closer to $.50/can, then go for it.
NN mac and cheese $.48 each
NN sour cream $2.98
NN shredded cheese 1kg bag $10.98 I realize that this is a bit more than buying in the brick, but I like the nacho-spiced variety.
NN marshmallows big 1kg bag $3.98 (that's $1.00 off regular)
3 things I'm not sure of - avocadoes $2.75/bag of 5
fresh pineapple 2/$4.00
mangoes 4kg case for $5.88
Sobeys - Sale price followed by the additional 15% discounted price

Jello instant or cooked pudding $4/3.96($.99 each) Good to stock up since the regular price is usually around $1.39 or higher.

red seedless grapes $1.38/lb
bagged iceberg or coleslaw bog 3 lb bag $2.48!!

My kids love Nutella, so I see its on for $4.99 at Zellers starting tomorrow, if anyone else is interested.
I saw some extra specials not in the flyer at Superstore
While wondering the aisles at Superstore yesterday, I spied a couple of things.
Peanut butter - NN 2Kg jar $4.48 OR
Kraft 2Kg jar $4.89 Both had a limit of 2.
Christie graham and chocolate crumbs $2.77. Limit of 2. That's $1.00 of the regular price. The NN regular price is close to this sale price.
Dried Mango - Sarah, this is for you. I know you enjoy these. 800g bag $12.89. It sounds like a lot, but it's cheaper than in the bulk bins.
I suspect these prices will be in effect only till closing Friday, so heads up.
