JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week

It looks like Sobeys is the store of choice for this week. It's 15% Tuesday and with the discount, prices look pretty good.
Sobeys - Sale price followed by the additional 15% discounted price
Cherries (not that great, but with discount . . . well I'm a cherry fanatic, so anything that resembles a sale and I'm hooked) $2.49/lb $2.12/lb
Asparagus $1.99/lb $1.69/lb
head lettuce $.99 ea $.84 ea
Celery $1.29 ea $1.09 ea
Cantaloupe $1.49 ea $1.27 ea
Romaine hearts (if you like these better than the whole romaine head)
$2.49/pack of 3 $2.12 That's $.70/head
Mushrooms 200g pkg $1.99 ea $1.69 ea
bottled water $1.49/case of 12 $1.27/case
Note that this is the 12-bottle case, not the 24. The 24-case is $3.99. Hmmm. Do they think we are that easily fooled??!!!
Campbell's soup 12 cans/case $5.99 $5.09 That's $.42/can
Hams and Hots/doz $1.99 $1.69/doz
Pork ribs, breast bone removed $1.99/lb or $4.39/Kg $1.69/lb or $3.74/Kg
Chicken thighs $1.99/lb or $4.39/kg $1.69/lb or $3.74/kg
Whole frying chicken same price as the thighs above. Anyone taken the time to calculate how much weight is skin and bones in a fryer vs buying thighs or breast? I'd like to know which is more economical when the prices are the same.
Compliments smokies 1Kg pkg $6.99 $5.94
Fresh instore pizza starts at $6.99 starts at $5.94 Plus if you buy 2 pizzas,
you will receive 100 Club Sobeys points.
Kraft salad dressings 475 mL $1.99 $1.69 OR
Compliments salad dressings 475mL $1.89 $1.59
Frozen veggies 1 Kg bag $2.49 $2.12 Great if they carry petite peas
or peaches and cream corn (both my top picks)
FREE 4L jug of milk with purchase ofany 3 Kelloggs Cereal. so here are some decent prices on Kelloggs cereal.
Family pack 500g - 1.35Kg $4.99 $4.24
Corn Flakes 210 - 750g $2.99 $2.55

NoFrills
Frozen boneless. skinless chicken breast $2.00/lb $4.41/kg That works out to less than $18.00 for a 4kg box that is normally sold. But I think the ones at NoFrills are in the 2kg bag. So that would be under $9.00/bag. Wow!
The rest of the prices are either the same or higher than the specials at Sobeys, especially if you shop on Tuesday. But if you miss Tuesday, then check out the prices for NoFrills and you may want to head out there.

Co-op Besides whatever they feature for $1.49Day, here is what's in the flyer
strawberries 4lb pkg $5.99. That's cheaper than frozen!!!
Purex toilet paper 12 double rolls $4.98 with coupon. But check out Canadian Tire, they have 24 double rolls for $8.98. Better, but if you like Royale better (it is softer in my opinion) Canadian Tire's is $4.99 for 24 single of 12 double rolls.
Speaking of Canadian Tire, Fleecy dryer sheets are $3.99 for 80 sheet box
Astro yogurt 650g tub 4/$5.00 That's $1.25/tub
Jello instant or cooked pudding $4/3.96($.99 each) Good to stock up since the regular price is usually around $1.39 or higher.

Superstore
$25 gift card with $250 purchase. Remember that they will match prices, except 15% discounts.
red seedless grapes $1.38/lb
bagged iceberg or coleslaw bog 3 lb bag $2.48!!
NN smokies 1kg pkg $4.48 (regular $5.99) My big kids like the Mexican, but they're far too hot for me. I like the Polish.
Ok. Here's my confession. Last week, I bought sugar snap peas (for the first time in my life) at Sobey's at their Bogo event. They were the little 227g bags. Regular $3.79, so Bogo puts them at $1.90. I discovered it's my new indulgence. Better than chocolate by far. Sorry if I have offended you choc-aholics out there:) Anyway, to my surprise, the big bag is on sale at Superstore for $5.98 907g bag. That would mean that my little bags last week would be $1.50. Guess what I'm buying at Supertore this week. I've bought the other peas before, but the sugar snap are to die for!!
Back to business:
Skim milk powder 2.5kg bag (makes 25L milk) $19.98. That's nearly $5.00 of the regular price. Great for food storage. I use it in my bread recipe
canned pineapple $.80 each
canned tuna 6cans/$4.48 That's nearly $.75/can, but if you are running low and can't wait till it's closer to $.50/can, then go for it.
NN mac and cheese $.48 each
NN sour cream $2.98
NN shredded cheese 1kg bag $10.98 I realize that this is a bit more than buying in the brick, but I like the nacho-spiced variety.
NN marshmallows big 1kg bag $3.98 (that's $1.00 off regular)

3 things I'm not sure of - avocadoes $2.75/bag of 5
fresh pineapple 2/$4.00
mangoes 4kg case for $5.88

Zellers new flyer

My kids love Nutella, so I see its on for $4.99 at Zellers starting tomorrow, if anyone else is interested.

I saw some extra specials not in the flyer at Superstore

While wondering the aisles at Superstore yesterday, I spied a couple of things.
Peanut butter - NN 2Kg jar $4.48 OR
Kraft 2Kg jar $4.89 Both had a limit of 2.
Christie graham and chocolate crumbs $2.77. Limit of 2. That's $1.00 of the regular price. The NN regular price is close to this sale price.
Dried Mango - Sarah, this is for you. I know you enjoy these. 800g bag $12.89. It sounds like a lot, but it's cheaper than in the bulk bins.
I suspect these prices will be in effect only till closing Friday, so heads up.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week

Thanks Leisel for getting on top of this for me.
Superstore - A few more items
Bonesless, skinless chicken breast - $24.52
tomatoes on the vine $.96
Five Alive 1.89L - $1.47 each (of course not as good No Frills last month, but still good)
mangoes $.65 when you buy4
potatoes $4.88/20lbs. As before, these are #2 grade, not #1, but if you are choosy on the bag you buy, you'll be fine. After all, it's the price of a 10lb bag of #1 grade.
pork should blade steak $1.88/lb or $4.14/kg
Leisel, the PC crackers are $1.49/box if you are not opposed to store brand. I quite like them. Or if Bretons are more to your liking, they are $1.67/box

Co-op
watermelon $3.99 each

Safeway
ice cream $3.99/4L pail

Save-on
lean hamburger $1.79/lb or $3.85/kg sold in the 5.b tube. Not the greatest price, but I haven't seen it any better for quite some time. So if you are running low, I'd get some now and perhaps in the near future, it will come down.
colored peppers $1.99/lb

Walmart
Still has eggs, milk and butter. See previous week's postings if you are not sure of the prices.

Sobey's Bogo event (I have listed the regular prices, then the bogo price, so don't get confused)
sugar snap peas $3.59 ea $1.79 ea on bogo
outside round steak or roast, boneless $4.26/lb or $9.49/kg That's only $2.13/lb or $4.70/kg
chicken breast, fresh, whole, bone-in $3.99/lb or $8.80/kg. That's $1.99/lb or $4.40/kg
Five Alive 1.89L carton $2.99 $1.49 on bogo
Imperial Margarine 3lb tub (1.36kg) $5.99 $2.99/tub on bogo

Remember that all the above prices will be matched at Superstore, so if you want to make only a single stop, then that's your best bet.

No Frills
frozen salmon fillets 450g $3.77/pkg
frozen fruit 600g bag $2.88
fresh strawberries $1.44/lb
English cucumbers $.77 ea
watermelon $3.97 ea
They also have many other specials that are identical to Superstore's this week, so you can decide if you want to drive out to Sylvan to take advantage of these deals and pick up the other specials at the same time.

Liesel's Superstore Picks

I don't think there's much this week because it's a long weekend and they know we'll be buying anyway.

No Name ketchup 1L 2/$3 good for if you make your own BBQ sauces/marinades

Happy shopping.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week

Superstore - Their weekly "free" item is pretty sweet. Too bad the grocery specials don't match. Save 10-25 cents/litre on gas (depending on your grocery purchase)
Here's how it works:
minimum grocery purchase discount at the pump
$100 10 cents
$150 15 cents
$200 25 cents
This is on top of the 5 cents/litre Superbuck you receive at anytime.

There is also another "free" item. It's a folding camp chair. Free with $150 purchase. So if gas is not your thing, maybe a chair is.

Now for the grocery specials worth noting:
Watermelon $3.97 each
Asparagus $1.77/lb
mushrooms $1.97/lb (packaged)
NN ice cream $3.98 4L pail
mustard $.88/400 mL squeeze bottle
Black Diamond processed cheese slices (if you eat this stuff) $3.97/500g package
My mistake. If you want the above cheese slices, Sobey's price is only $2.99
Exact tampons, or pads 3/$5.00 Works out to $1.67 each. That's less than their best sale price of $1.99/box
Degree, Right Guard or Secret Deodorant and Antiperspirant 2/$4.00
Old Spice or Gillette body wash $3.99

I'm on it!! I saw NoFrills ad for this week and I'm going out there tomorrow before everything's gone. Anyone want to go, let me know by 8:30 tomorrow am.

No Frills
5Alive or fruitopia cans $3.44/case of 12
5 Alive or fruitopia juice boxes $1.99/pack of 10
cottonelle (the sooo soft stuff for the grown-ups) $5.49/12 double rolls
Kraft bbq sauce $.88
NN mac and cheese $.57
watermelon $.397 each
cukes $.77 (and if they are as big as last time, great!! They were almost double-sized)

Sobey's
strawberries $2.99/2lbs
head lettuce $.99
Purex toilet paper (for the kids) $6.99/15double rolls
bulk weiners regular or BBQ $1.49/lb or $3.28/kg

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week

No Frills prices start on Friday and go till Thursday
Purex toilet paper 15 double rolls $5.97 That's less than $.40/roll
Michelina's frozen entrees - $.99 (If you buy these for lunches or work)
mustard 400 mL - $.97
colored peppers $1.99/lb
large 10" soft tortilla wraps $1.99 (This particular brand is usually over $3.00)

Sobey's prices start on Friday and go till Thursday
Dollar days
romaine lettuce $1
tomatoes on the vine $1
French bread $1
Smarties or Aero Ice cream 400 mL tub $1
celery $1
mushrooms 200g/ $1 each
pork picnic shoulder roast $1/lb This depends on how much trimming is left on the roast. Often, the whole rind and the bottom of the leg (called the hock) is also left on. This is complete waste and you end up paying for weight that you don't use. I haven't seen it, so I don't know. But in any event, it will be large and you may want to ask the butcher to cut it in half for you.
chicken legs - back attached fresh $1.49/lb
baby cut carrots $1/a lb bag
oranges 3/$1 not too bad
cukes $1 each

Walmart
Still has milk, eggs and butter. This means that Superstore will match and NoFrills will also because they compete with SuperWalmart in Sylvan

Superstore Free item this week 8pk frozen burgers (Thick and Juicy varieties) abd a bag of buns if you spend a minimum of $150
strawberries (Saturday and Sunday only) this is a continuation of this past week's price
cukes - 3pk $2.28 ($.76 each)
PC 2L pop $.79
red potatoes 20lbs $4.88. This looks like an awesome price, but be aware that these are No. 2 grade, which means that they may be small, have defects or be otherwise below prime. Be choosy
grape tomatoes $1.98 each
baby carrots 2lb bag $1.88
Here's a few NN features. Some I am not sure of because I don't use them, but if I think they seem decent, I'll list them.
pancake mix $1.68 (950 g box)
pancake syrup $1.68 750mL
canned fruit $.98 (398mL can)
pot pies 5/$3.90 or $.75 each
fish sticks 700 g $3.98
hash browns $1.18/1kg bag

Co-op
Ice cream 4L pail $3.99 I suspect Superstore will match this if you are already there and don't want to go everywhere.

That's it. Nothing much exciting. But, again, if anyone is going out to NoFrills, be sure to post it on the blog as a comment so that someone can carpool with you.
