Grocery Deals

Ditto to JoAnn.
Superstore has some other good deals including the 10kg flour, 6pack tuna for <$4.
Sobeys has strawberries for $2.99/2lbs - if you get the 15% off that's a really sweet deal.

Zesty Quinoa Salad

serves 8
2 c water
1 cube/1tbsp chicken boullion
1c quinoa
2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp canola oil
1 tbsp lime juice
1 red pepper
1 c corn (or 1x 12oz can)
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1 small red onion
19 0z can chickpeas (I've never added these)
3 tbsp feta cheese crumbles

Rinse quinoa, cook in water and chicken boullion (follow package directions, basically bring to boil, simmer for 15min). Meanwhile, chop pepper and onion. Mix all ingredients. can be served warm or cold.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks

Just looking at the NoFrills flyer for next week (starts Friday) and this is not an April Fool's joke.
Kraft Peanut butter 2kg jar $3.99!! Meghan Anderson wants some, but can't get out to Sylvan. If anyone is going, please give her a call.
Nothing else too exciting, but I thought that deserved mentioning.
Changed my mind - Liesel, the Unico canned tomatoes are $.88 again.

Superstore
There are some things worth mentioning here.
romaine $.86
green grapes $.127
cantaloupe $1.66 ea
mushrooms $1.98/454g pkg
gala apples 6lb bag $3.48 (that's $.58/lb)
frozen strawberries 2kg bag $6.98 (that's the same as $2.09/600g bag!!!)
NN soups $4.78/case of 12 That's $.40/can
NN pasta 2kg bag $2.78
Hershey's chipits 2kg bag $10.99 (That's $.55/100g if you were buying bulk)
Miniwheats $2.97
Cottonelle 24 double rolls $9.97 ($.42/roll)
NN flour $6.59 limit 2 (If you didn't get out to NoFrills for $3.00 for half-size bag)

Co-op

Humts thick and Rick pasta sauce $1.00
Co-op Gold juice boxes 5-pack $1.00
Hershey's bars 2/$1.00
Pork loin sliced into chops $1.99/lb or $4.37/kg

Sobey's 15% this Tuesday
Have to run, so I'll finish later
It's now later.
Fresh strawberrie $2.99/2lb clamshell less 15% $2.54. Now I just mentioned that Superstore has frozen strawberries for $6.98 for 2kg. I have either had a lightbulb moment, or I'm blonder than I thought. Here's my puzzle. One would think that fresh produce is more expensive than frozen. But, at $2.54/2lb, that's equavilent to $5.63/2kg!!??Here's another comparison, if I were to buy a 600g bag of frozen fruit (that's the regular bag with the ziploc top) at the price of theses fresh strawberries, I would pay only $1.69!!! Are you serious?! Therefore, fresh is cheaper than frozen??? Then, logically, one would load up on the fresh, enjoy until you've made yourself sick, then freeze the rest. Hmmm. If I'm missing the obvious, would someone please let me know. After all, a 2kg bag of frozen strawberries typically is around $10. That would mean that even the tiny 1 lb clamshell of fresh strawberries would be $2.25 - which I wouldn't pay. A 2 lb clamshell would be $4.50 - I'd NEVER pay that. So why am I/we spending such high prices for frozen?? Help me out.

Okay, I'll carry on with the rest.

cheese $4.99/500g. Not anything special until you add the discount $4.24. Now that's the same as a 900g block for $7.64. Now we're talking.
cukes $.99 with discount $.84 ea
eggs 18/carton $3.49 less discount $2.97 which is $1.98/dozen

Safeway
Cheez Whiz 1kg jar $4.99

Costco - If anyone happens to be out there and spies an awesome deal, post a comment here, call me and most likely have to leave a message, or send the RS or me an email. Without flyers, we have no way of knowing what's happening out there.
joannlynn@telus.net
On that vein, Alisha Oullette regularily buys croissents and bagels by the case from Costco, but rarely has room in her freezer for that much. She would gladly split with someone. If anyone is interested, give her a call.

Billet help for May 5th and May 6th.

Lanieca is co-chair for ASLC and they desperately need people who will billet. They don't have all the forms filled out yet, but they do need names and contact numbers. If you can help out please email me with your name and phone number and the amount of students you could take. Remember these are the BEST students in the school. Thanks Danece and Lanieca

If you can do this please send Danece and e-mail and get the forms. dworkman@rdpsd.ab.ca

Hi everyone -

We so appreciate your willingness to consider billeting Leadership Students from around the province for the nights of May 5 & 6 while they are in Red Deer for the Alberta Student Leadership Conference (only happens in Red Deer every 20 years or so...). We are in need of billets for 600 amazing young people and really need your help finding families for all these students.

Below are step by step instructions....

1. Review the Billeting Information and Check List
2. Complete Billeting Application indicating your interest in billeting and forward to Darwin Roscoe at Hunting Hills High School ASAP
3. Review the Driver's Abstract Information
4. Complete the ASLC Driver's Abstract form, make a copy of your driver's license and a copy of your insurance and send or bring to Darwin Roscoe at HHHS (with Billet Application)
5. Review the Criminal Record Check Information
6. Print the RCMP Cover Letter and take to downtown detachment (don't forget picture ID). Bring a copy of your CRC to Darwin Roscoe at HHHS (with Billet Application if possible)
7. Review the CWC Information

Feel free to forward this to your friends, your family, and even your friend's family....

Thank you again for considering!

JoAnn's Grocery Picks

Not exactly groceries, but Canadian Tire has a couple of noteworthy Saturday specials.
Old Dutch liquid laundry detergent 50load jug for $1.88 (that's less than $.04/load) I have used this before and it works just fine. But I also have soft water and so I don't know how well it will perform otherwise.
Charmin Toilet paper - yes Liesel, both the extra soft and extra strong 20 double rolls $7.97. That's less than $.40/roll and sure beats Purex or Royale. However, a note of caution. If you don't want your kids plugging up the toilet because they are used to using the thin stuff, buy it only for the ensuite! Then go to Superstore and get Royale (still better than the really thin stuff). See yesterday's post for details. This is for 3 days - meaning Friday (today) Saturday and Sunday (which doesn't count)

JoAnn's Grocery Picks

Here's next week's ahead of the weekend!!! Don't get used to it, it's just a blip.

Royale toilet paper 24 double rolls $8.97. That's $.37/roll
NN ice cream $3.98
fresh pineapple $1.96
broccoli crowns - $.99/lb
bartlett pears $.96/lb

NoFrills

sour cream 500mL $1.00
Delissio flatbreads $1.00
Fuji apples 5lbs/$3.00 That's $.60/lb
frozen boneless, skinless chicken breast $2.00/lb That's under $18.00 for a 4kg box
Alaskan pollock fillets $3.00/680g That's 1/2 price
NN flour 5kg bag $3.00 I'm sure you are knitting your brow as you read this. Let me clarify. This is the smaller bag (1/2 the regular size) But look at the price - at $3.00, it's equal to $6.00 for the regular bag. And if food prices are rising as predicted, now's as good a time as any to stock up for the next 6-12 months. Hopefully they have unbleached.

Sobeys
It's their BOGO event and here are some exceptional bargains
Kraft Peanut butter 1kg jar $2.99 Bogo - $1.50 for a 1kg jar!!! Limit of 4
sugar snap peas small 227g bag $3.99 Bogo is equal to $5.98 for the large 680g (reg $8.98)
Vegetable medley packages 340g $2.99 Bogo $1.50 ea
There are other Bogo items as listed below, but either the prices or products don't interest me, but feel free to check it out.
Kaiser buns
fresh mushrooms
sugar cereal (honeycomb, alphabits, etc)
Catelli pasta (not sure if this includes Whole wheat)
Yogurt
Magarine
Perogies
Smokies
Chicken breast - $4.49/lb which works to $2.50/lb Too much for me.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks

Thanks for doing my job for me. Pretty soon we will all be posting for each other. Wonderful.
I haven't taken much of a look yet for this week (so sorry), but I hope to get at it. I've been busy getting Devon off to the mission field and cleaning up in his wake. :)

But on a completely different note - Tanner belonged to the fencing club last year and is not continuing this year. He has the glove and wire needed to participate. It's valued at about $40. If anyone is interested in taking up the sport, let me know. You are certainly welcome to it. I'd hate for it to go to waste.
