JoAnn's Grocery Pick for the week

I've had a chance to view NoFrills flyer and many of the 1/2 price deals have been carried over to next week. So if you missed out, you have another chance. I will most likely be going out, so give me a shout, we can go together, or if you trust me, I can pick up what you need.
Sobeys - 15% Tuesday coming up, but it's rather weak.
mandarins 5 lb box $3.49 $2.97 with discount That's $.59/lb
Pizza pops 4/box $1.99 $1.69 with discount That's $.42 each. I refuse to pay more than $.50 each.
Kelloggs cereal $4.00/box $3.40 with discount. Not the best price out there, but if you buy 3 boxes, you receive a jug of milk free. That makes a difference to your overall cost.
General mills cereal same price as above, so if you like this kind better, however, no free milk
Hunt's pasta sauce $1.29 $1.09 with discount. Again, it is often $1.00, but this is close.
head lettuce $.99 each $.84 each
colored peppers $2.49/lb $2.11/lb with discount. This is usually ok, but NoFrills has me spoiled with a bag of 4 for only $1.47. That's less than $.75/lb for reds.
Don't forget:
Milk $3.97 $3.37 with discount
eggs $1.97/doz $1.67 with discount
butter $2.97 $2.52 with discount

That's it - except for the 3-day-only specials:
asparagus $1.99/lb
chicken legs (drums and thighs together) $1.29/lb or $2.84/kg

Superstore - $25 gift card with $250 purchase
NN ice cream $3.98
NN soups $3.98/case of 12 That's $.33/can)
Asparagus $1.96/lb Same as Sobeys, but for the whole week
onions $.96/3lb bag
NN milk powder $19.98 The regular price is $23.98 so a good chance to add to your food storage.
NN club pack cereals $3.99. Limit of $3.99

Campbells soup $.47/can
Duncan Hines cake mixes $.99 This has been going for quite some time - no idea for how much longer.
Salmon fillets $3.97/lb or $8.80 If this sounds like a lot, remember that there is no waste.

JoAnn's Grocery Pick for the week

First things first.
Sobey's has a 3 day sale (Fri-Sun) and hamburger is $1.79/lb That's a decent price if you need to stock up. Fresh pineapple is $1.79 each and Christie crackers are $1.69. (I'm not a connoisseur so Superstore brand works for me and they are typically $1.50 and sometimes $1.25, but to each his own).
Save-on has a few bargains this week.
Also 3 days only (Fri-Sun) Cauliflower for $.99 each
The rest of the week:
onions 3lb bag $1.00
mandarins 5lb box $3.99
tomatoes $.99/lb
green peppers $.99/lb
romaine lettuce $.99 ea
Crush pop 2L $1.00
Superstore also has a few bargains
Free mini DVD player with purchase of $250.00
Fresh chicken drums or thighs (thighs have a better meat/bone ratio) $1.78/lb $3.92/kg
Cottonelle toilet paper (the soft stuff) 24 double rolls $9.97 limit 4
tortilla wraps 2/$4.00 But if you catch them at McGavins Bread Basket, they are only $1.00
sugar snap peas $5.98 (yum)
mandarins 9lb box $6.88. This is essentially the same price at Save-on's for the smaller box
NN soda crackers $2.98 for the big box
Delissio frozen pizza $4.97 limit of 6
Crest toothpast 5/$5.00
Exact "Q-tips" 5/$5.00
Blistex lip balms 5/$5.00

And now for the most exciting of all - NoFrills 1/2 off week
Fresh chicken breast $1.87/lb or $4.12/kg That would be $17.00 for the box of frozen boneless skinless fillets. Here you get the bone, but the flavor and texture is far superior
Pork loin - same price as above. If you will recall a month ago the price was $1.00/lb. But that was an anomoly and we should not expect that price anytime in the near future
Bluewater fish fillets $1.69/300g box. It is the smaller box, but if you calculate the price for the 700g box, it would calculate to $3.83 and it's the higher quality fillets. (not the minced fish)
Ricotta cheese $1.79/tub
spartan apples $2.24/5lb bag ($.45/lb)
cantaloupe $.99
pears 6lb bag $3.49 $.58/lb
grape tomatoes $1.49/pint
red peppers 4/bag $1.47
McCain pizza $3.64
Unico pasta 900g $.99 ea
Soy Beverage 1.89L $1.64 (that would be $3.47 4L of milk at this price)
Michelina's frozen entrees $.88 ea
Alaskan pollock fillets 680g package $2.99
Vector cereal and other Kelloggs $2.13

Fresh chicken breast $1.99/lb or $4.39/kg That's my max price, so govern yourself accordingly

celery $1.00 ea

McGavin's Bread Basket

Friday Oct 29 - customer appreciation day save 20% off everything.
I buy the day-old bread/bagels/buns etc 10 for $10 so with 20% that means only $8 or $0.80 per item - pretty good price. If you don't have room in your freezer, go with a friend.
Also, today they had a bunch of buns (hamburger, hot dog, kaiser) for $1.25 but, buy one get one free, so that's like, um, 62.5cents a package (did the math in my head, hope it's right).
If you haven't been before, it's on the north end, east side of gaetz just before the lights at 77th street.

DO YOU HAVE YOUR TURKEY YET?

I just got a coupon in the mail for Sobeys. $.69/lb for turkey. But alas, it's only good till this Sunday. So if anyone wants it - it's yours. But you better call me, don't post it as I may not see it. If you call while I'm at the Farmers market tomorrow, be sure to leave a message and then call back around 2 pm to double check that I received it. I'd like someone to use this, so don't be shy.

No Frills + Superstore

No Frills
strawberries $1.77/ 1lb
bartlett or bosc pears $0.97/lb
mars bars $0.49 (I think someone out there is trying really hard to get me fat)
Pork tenderloin $2.97/lb (cryovac 2 pack) - this doesn't JoAnn's definition but the flyer states that it's half-price
broccoli $0.67/bunch. I could eat this stuff all day, every day. I really like it with (low-fat) cheese sauce and I've been adding paprika to spice it up - yummy.
black diamond cheese strings 16 pk $3.99 (save $2.88)
Chapman's frozen yogurt $3.99 for 500mL (pricy, but if you're on a diet and want something healthier than ice cream that still tastes good, this is a good choice)
McCain Premeire Traditional crust pizza $3.99 (save $1)

Superstore
$25 gift card with $250 purchase (Oct 8-11)
NN cheese $7.98 for 907g (reg $9.98), limit 2
cantaloupe $1.46 each
Harvest Crunch, Life, Corn Bran squares (RD choice for high fibre and okay tasting), oatmeal squares (taste better, less fibre), cap'n crunch (NO fibre), $2.99, reg $4.98 limit 2
apple juice $0.97 1L
flyer coupons
save $2 on Cover Girl cosmetics
save $5 on select Hasbro games (monopoly, guess who, connect 4, operation, twister, clue, battleship, pictureka, scrabble (I hate that game), candy land, hungry hungry hippo) PLUS they are already 25% off
bartlett pears $4.98 for 6lbs (better than No Frills, but I can't eat that many pears)

That's all for today. I just realized that there may be other deals but I often don't list them because I filter everything through a dietitian's eye first. If they aren't too healthy, I'll usually put a disclaimer. Eat a salad with your pizza instead of 1/2 a pizza. much better for you :)

JoAnn's Grocery Pick for the week

As Liesel said, not much worth mentioning. But I'll list what Sobey's has that may be worth it for Discount Tuesday. And here comes the sales pitch - the Sobey's gift cards are now on sale. (I'm talking Travis' fundraiser of Sobey's Gift Cards) This is great for you since you are getting full value for your dollar. You pay $25 and receive a gift card for $25. It's valid anytime and at any Sobey's and never expires. Travis would be very happy for your orders. As I mentioned in an earlier post to the blog, he is going to Greece with the Design Studies class and this is one of their fundraisers. Unfortunately, they won't be ready for pick up by this Tuesday. I tried to suggest that, but the committee wasn't sure we should sell them so soon. Sorry.
Sobeys I'm focusing on Tuesday prices. So my comments relate to Tuesdays and not to the rest of the week.
Turkey $.99/lb $.84/lb Yes, Liesel this is a good price, especially on Tuesday. I make it a rule to never pay more than $.99/lb for turkey, but I also make it a rule to try to get it for free at Superstore.
Compliments ham $1.99/lb or $4.39/kg $1.69/lb or $3.73/kg I'm not sure if this is an old fashioned with the bone in, or the boneless style. But if you look at the price/kg, you will realize that if you were buying this in the deli, it would be selling for $.37/100. when was the last time you bought luncheon meat, especially ham for that price!!
Black Diamond cheese $4.99/500g $4.24/500g If you missed out on the awesome price the last 2 weeks at Walmart on Armstrong cheese, you could pick up some of this. It would be equal to $7.63 for the 908g blocks.
sour cream 500 ml tub $1.99 $1.69 I usually buy the 1L tub at Superstore for around $3.25 This would be $3.38 and you can have a smaller container open at a time, extending the fridge life.
broccoli $.99 $.84
yams $.49/lb $.41 Makes spectacular pumpkin pie!!
pears $.99/lb $.84/lb
red potatoes $4.99 $4.24 Their potatoes are good quality. You could get a couple of bags at this price and they'd keep for at least a month.
baby carrots, 2lb bag $1.99 $1.69
Tray buns $3.49/24 $2.97/24 That's $1.50/doz and their bakery makes good stuff. Just usually rather expensive
General Mills jumbo size cereal $4.99 $4.24
Life cereal $3.49 $2.96

Then, while you are there collecting your 15% off, pick up eggs, milk and butter at Walmart's lower price + 15%. Works for me.

Have a good week and happy shopping.
