Deals this week - not so much

So I discussed it with JoAnn - there are not many earth-shatter deals this week, so check the flyers if you're looking for something specific.
Superstore has it's $25 gift card with $250 purchase and it's 10%/15% Tuesday on the 5th for the other stores.
Hmm, turkey for $0.99/lb. Is that good? I'll contribute the spices if someone wants to invite me over for dinner.

JoAnn's Grocery Pick for the week

NoFrills
This week is not that great, but I shall list what I see. There a few carry overs from last week and a few new ones. If you didn't get the pork loin for $1.00/lb, I am sorry. It's not offered this week.
Sirloin tip roast $2.00/lb That's not the lowest it's been, but if you are low in stock, I'd go for it.
Cantaloupe $1.00 ea
Grapes - red or green $1.00/lb
Green peppers 4/pkg $2.00
MacIntosh apples $3.00/5lb bag ($.60/lb)
Chicken thighs - fresh $2.00/lb Not spectacular, but will do.
McCain fries 1kg bag $1.00
Deodorant $2.00

Benchmark Baking Prices

Liesel had a request for what's a good price for baking needs. So I'll try to cover most of it. Always compare bulk to packaged. It's not always cheaper one way or the other. Depends on the current sales. You can always store your bulk or larger opened packages in airtight containers, such as Tupperware or Rubbermaid and it will keep just fine. If anyone thinks of anything else, feel free to add.

Flour under $6.00/bag
Sugar under $9.00/bag ( 25 lb bag - or 10kg for the younger generation)
Brown Sugar around $3.00/bag (2 lb)
Icing Sugar around $2.00/bag (1 lb)
Cream Cheese under $2.30/brick
Sweetened Condensed milk under $2.00/can
Whipping cream just over $3.00/L Keeps for a 6-8 weeks
almonds under $1.00/100g in bulk. Watch SStore for 1kg bags for under $10.00/bag
Pecans/walnuts under $1.30/100g in bulk. Watch SStore for 1kg bags for under $13.00/bag
Raisins under $.40/100g in bulk.
Lard (for the best pie crust) under $1.20/lb
Pie filling Sstore sells their NName for under $2.50 quite frequently. In fact I have bought it for $1.99. I find it is just as good and the cherry is even better than EDSmith. That's my opinion for what it's worth. However, the best cherries come off Sheila's tree!! But that's a trade secret.
Chocolate chips under $.70/100g for milk chocolate chips and $.50 for regular
Dipping Chocolate under $1.00/100g If you pay less than that, you are getting a lot of wax mixed in it, therefore poorer quality.
Coconut under $.50/100g
Baking Powder This is unfamiliar to me. I buy the 5kg pail from the Wholesale and keep the lid on tight. It lasts for year. Sorry if this is of no help.
Vanilla This is a thorn in my side. Over the years I have been spoiled with pure vanilla from Mexico. If you haven't experienced the difference, you just haven't lived. And to top it off, it's usually around $10/GALLON!! Now, don't we pay about $24/L? That would be the equivalent of $100/gallon. So you see why I get peeved with the vanilla here. So any of you out there who frequents Mexico, PLEASE, PLEASE let me know. I would love to get some of the good stuff.
Brick Margarine Don't be fooled by the 1lb blocks. I buy the 1/4 lb squares sold in the 3lb box. When on sale, SStore brand is $2.29. That's a little over $.70/lb. Try getting that price in the 1lb blocks. And the 1/4 lb squares are so handy. Just remember that 1/4 lb is a 1/2 cup of marg.
Eggs Continue to enjoy the widespread price of $1.97/doz. Keep in mind too that on discount Tuesday, they are even cheaper at Sobey's.

That's all I that comes to mind. If I think of more, I'll post it.

Some Deals

Walmart
mostly the same as last week,

Bear Paws cookies or crackers $2
Dare Simple pleasures cookies $1.97
Olay, Gilette, Old Spice Zest or Ivory body wash $2.99
Degree antipersperant $1.49
Herbal Essences shampoo $1.99

Photolab - if you order 100 prints, 10cent prints. I like to save up printing my pics for deals like these. Costco should be having their 12cent print sale (no minimums in Nov I think)
Ziggy's int'l roast beef deli meat $0.97/100g (club pack)
Fall Baking needs - JoAnn will be posting soon about good prices for baking since Christmas is coming, but here are a few this week
flour $5.98 10kg good price
ED smith pie filling $3.97 - JoAnn says noname is just as good and half the price FYI
Whole Almonds $9.98 for 1kg
pecan halves $12.98 for 1kg (maybe not the best deal, but buy sooner than later to ensure you have what you want on hand when you start your baking. I mean, really, don't you all have urges to make candied pecans at random times?)
condensed milk $1.99 - very good, usually $3 a can
mcCain frozen pizza $3.99
PC frozen orange juice $1
GM cheerios $1.98

Here's another tidbit about superstore (and probably most other stores) - just because it's in the ad, does not mean the item is on sale. They will often have items at regular price in the ads. I believe that companies pay big money to have their products placed in these weekly flyers. Know your prices so that you don't get sucked in by a pretty picture ad and then see it at a better price later.
Happy shopping.

Fundraising support - Anyone

Travis is going to Greece this spring with the Design Studies class. (I`m so jealous, especially since they are not even taking parent chaperones!!)
They are organizing several fundraisers. If anyone is interested in any of these, please let me know. Travis and I would be most grateful.
Spaghetti Dinner - All you can eat spaghetti with your choice of tomato or Alfredo sauce, garlic toast and Ceasar salad and beverage. Saturday, October 25. This is the same evening as the RS Broadcast, so I`m thinking that those "poor" husbands left at home could come and eat their hearts out. Tickets are on a pre-sell basis only, so give us a call to get your tickets. There will be door prizes to be won as well.
Sobeys Gift Cards - These are used either by yourself to pay for groceries or to use as gifts for family or friends. Also, they would make very nice Christmas gifts for employees or valued customers. They are available in denominations of $25, $50, or $100. The cost to you is no more than the face value of the card. IE If you want a $50 gift card, you pay $50. Sobeys rebates back to the student a percentage of the total sales. That is how the student makes their money. You are not out any money and if you already shop at Sobeys, then it`s a win - win. We will be running this in the next few weeks and will continue through December for those looking to purchase for Christmas gifts.
Collicut Passes - I do not have the details, but the basic premise is if you do not buy monthly passes because you visit the Collicut on an occasional basis, you can save nearly 50%!! There are single or family passes available and good news - the Collicut does not restrict the definition of a family. So our large families are not penalized. I will have prices within the week.
Tupperware - With Michele out of the business, you may not have replaced your consultant. If you want any tupperware in the next month, I can get you a catalogue. Travis will receive a percentage of the sales.

On another note, Candace, is selling SUTP (as is almost every other student) for credits toward her choir fees. She has joined the famed LTCHS choir and they have a variety of fundraisers, this being one of them. The books are $20 again this year and have some very useful coupons. She also has access to Calgary and Edmonton books if you have family or friends who live in these cities. So if you have not already been bombarded by your own kids wanting to sell the books, let us know.

I have no idea how many people read this blog, so even if these fundraisers don`t"float your boat", perhaps you know someone who may be interested. I will take the opportunity to thank you now for supporting my kids in their endeavors. I realize this is an expensive time of year, so we truly thank you.
If you need to contact me, you can either send me an email joannlynn"telus.net( the text is not cooperating, so the "at"symbol is registering as a quotation mark. Hopefully you are smarter than I can read this email address) or call 403 346 8328.

Math Tips

Here's a math trick for the nine times tables, if you don't already know it. Say you have the question 9 x 3. With all fingers on both hands up, count 3 fingers from the left and put down the 3rd finger (it would be the left hand middle finger) Now you have 2 fingers up on the left side and 7 fingers up after the split so the answer is 27.

Try another one - 9 x 6 , from the left count over to 6 fingers and put it down (it would be the right hand thumb) now you have 5 fingers on the left hand up and 4 fingers after the split, so the answer is 54.

If it doesn't quite make sense ask me or one of my girls and they can show you. Hope that helps someone!!
Luella

Eye of round roast $1.77/lb or $3.90/kg This will redeem myself from the great faux pas from last week. I put in the sirloin tip roast at Save-on from an expired flyer. But this is $.22 cheaper and a better cut. So, I hope I'm back in the good books. Thanks NoFrills.
Schneiders sausage, beef burgers and a few other packaged meats 400-450g $1.67. I'm not familiar with these products, but at $.40/100g it's worth investigating.
Huggies Mega diapers (40-84's) $9.97 Is this a good price? I'm a bit out of touch these days.
Body Wash (Olay, Ivory, Gillette and Old Spice) $2.97

Some items carried over from last week:
Fresh chicken breast $2.36/lb or $5.20/kg This is a bit more than my target price, but if you are running low, you can get some to tie you over till a better price comes along.

Bulk wieners - regular or BBQ $1.69/lb $1.43/lb (that's $.32/100g)
Imperial Marg 3lb tub or squares $2.99 $2.54 So if you didn't stock up when it was $2.99 at NoFrills, here's an even better chance
Colgate 2/$3.00 2/$2.55 That's $1.27 each 75-130 mL tube
Oops. I just found a better price for colgate. $.99 at Zellers (but according to the flyer, only the 75 mL tubes)
Don't forget to get milk, and eggs while on your Tuesday trip and capitalize on your savings.

Zellers
Jim and Amy, tuna (truly brand) $.69 Getting better.
Purex 30-50 rolls $9.99 Friday and Saturday only
Canned Mushrooms $.50/can Friday and Sat. only
Mr. Doudas par boiled or chinese rice 8 kg bag $5.99. I am not familiar with this particular brand, but it is a good price. I usually buy the 18 kg bag for $26. The above price would be only $13.50 for an 18 kg bag. Friday and Sat only.

Canadian Tire
46 piece plastic storage $9.99 (reg $24.99) Skip trying to purchase $250 at Superstore. This looks just as good and has more pieces.

I'm going to try the solar light set - Stainless steel 10 pk for $29.99 (reg $89.99) I'll let you know what I think.
Need a second freezer, or just in the market for your first? This Danby 7 cu. ft. chest freezer is a decent price at $249.99
How about a 2-in-1 car seat? 22-80 lbs. Converts to a booster seat. Reg $159.99 $99.96
garbage bags $1.97/box of 40 Saturday only
Glad zip lock sandwich bags $.99 Saturday only
Anyone used an Infinity vacuum? Is it made by Dyson? It looks like it has the same cyclone set-up. I'd like a "true consumer report" if anyone has one to share.
Purex toilet paper 24 single rolls $4.99. I do believe this is the same equivalent as the big pkg at Zellers. Pretty close anyway.
I don't have the rest of the flyers yet, so I'll try to get them posted soon.
