A couple days' work

I received an email about short-term help wanted for the denim sale at the Westerner in April. Pays $15.00/hr for set up and take down and $13.00/hr to fold jeans during the sale. If you want to apply, I forwarded the email to the R.S. email address, so I think everyone should get it. If not, let me know.

RS Birthday Party Photos

Here are some photos taken at the Relief Society birthday party/dinner that took place Thursday, March 18th at the Kentwood Chapel. I think I speak for us all when I say that it was a blast. We all had a great time eating and chatting one with another and the games were fun (gotta love "Pin the Tie On the Bishop" (Bishop Goodwin, that is) :D).

Report on my road trip to No Frills in Sylvan

So, that was fun. I will be returning there and anyone who wants to go, I'll let you know and we can arrange to get together.
Aside from the items I highlighted in the blog (and by the way, there seemed to be no shortage of stock. Not like Superstore's sale items) I found some other things of interest. Apparently there was a Dollar Days a while back (at least 3 weeks) and any stock that is leftover from that sale remains at a dollar until sold. So, unlike other stores, they don't put the price back up after the sale is over. Lucky for me, because I was able to take advantage of some of those dollar day items.
Here is what I found to be a good price that was not advertized:
baby carrots $.89 (beats the sale price here)
pork back ribs $1.96/lb or $4.39/kg. That is a price not seen by this person. Sorry Luella, I meant to point that out to you. maybe someone else is going out before closing Thursday and they will get some for you.
Milk $3.86 Looks like they were competing with Walmart. Butter was also $2.97
From what I could tell, the following are regular prices, not temporary sales:
Instant potato flakes $2.99 (I use them in my bread)
Tortilla wraps $1.99(these were in the aisle with the taco seasonings)
Skim milk powder $21.99 - Superstore's price is at least $2.00 more for the exact bag. Food storage item, plus I use it to make bread.
NN chicken burgers 3kg bag $19.99. They are close to $23.00 at superstore (same bag). These are all white meat, uncooked. They don't have a processed flavor.
NN pizza pops box of 12/$4.99 As I mentioned in the earlier blog, I don't buy these convenience foods unless they work out to be less than $.50/serving. At $4.99, these are $.41 Consequently, they came home with me.
NN angel food cake mix. $2.19 Superstore price is $2.69 (The ones I bought last week are going back!!)
NN Soda crackers $1.69 Also less than sstore's regular price
Pam couldn't make it out with Luella and I today, so if anyone intends to go out, all her, she may just want to have you pick a few items for her. The flyer is good until closing Thursday. Sorry Pam, I would have done it, had I known. Next time.

a new home...

I have heard of two items that require new homes:
Carrie Oliver has a crib that she is looking to give away. Let Pam Liptak know if you are interseted.
Kayla Streibel has an entertainment unit that is oak veneered to give away.
Julie Pasutto's neighbour is looking to give away a couple of hockey bags full of used high end equipment to a family that couldn't otherwise afford to play hockey. interested? Call Julie.
Have a great day.

Grocery picks UPDATE!!

NO FRILLS.
Sorry ladies. I forgot to view No Frills (Sylvan or Lacombe) last week. There are some pretty good buys that are good until this Thursday. If anyone is interested in making the trip, let me know. We can travel together. They are open till 9pm each night if that helps.
Eye of round roast beef $1.97/lb $4.34/kg. This is a good price for any beef roast, but for eye of round (which is boneless and has no trimming to throw away) this is awesome!!
1/2 pork loin, cut into chops $1.97/lb $4.34/kg. This is also a good price for pork chops
Delissio pizza 2pk $6.97. Although your choices are limited to deluxe or pepperoni, remember this works out to $3.49/pizza. Nice to have on hand when you are strapped for time, or it's date night and you need to feed the kids before you leave.
Kraft peanut butter 2kg jar $3.98. I almost think this must be a mistake. That's at least $2.00 off the regular price!!
Blue Water breaded fish sticks. 700g package $3.98. This is the best price I've seen in a long time too.
Pogo's 20pk $8.99. No this isn't exactly a healthy meal, but it falls under the same category as the pizza. I consider pogo and pizza pops decently priced if they are less than $.50 each
Chicken strips 2kg box $9.99 Here we go again. It seems we are being tempted with the "quick meal" ideas. These are regularily over $12.00, so if this fits your menu style, go for it.
Grape tomatoes $1.97
Lettuce $.89 This is the same as SStore, but if you're already there, why not
Allen's juice boxes 24 pack $3.97. Note these are juice, not glorified Kool-Aid. This price is equivalent to $1.65/10pk, $.82/5pk or $.49/3pk, if these are the sizes you are used to.

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week

Walmart
Royale toilet paper - 14 double rolls $4.48
McCain Rising Crust Pizza $4.97
Milk - still $3.87 for 4% or 2%
Eggs - still $1.97
Butter - still $2.97
Hunt's Thick and Rich Pasta Sauce - $0.67. As Liesel said, even though this is the small cans (398 mL) it works out to be $1.34 for the large can, so if small is convenient for you, go for it.
Kellogg's jumbo cereal - $4.97. This is the lowest I have seen for quite some time.
If you're a Twilight fan, New Moon is $17.47!!

Save-on
WF frozen fruit 600g $3.99. I'm not too experienced at buying frozen fruit, but it is cheaper than SStores advertzed price of $4.48 for their PC brand
Romaine lettuce $.88
Asparagus (JoAnn's Fave!!) $1.68
WF frozen veggies - $.299 (This is not a particularily great deal, unless it's also 15% day too, but they have peaches and cream corn and petite peas in this size package and not in the larger bag.)
WF instant noodles $.19

Safeway
If you didn't get your turkey for free at SStore a few weeks ago, you can get one for $.97/lb with the coupon if you spend at least $25.
Cheez Whiz $5.00/kg jar.
Coleslaw $1.00
Garden Salad $1.00
Broccoli $1.00/bunch

Sobey's
Chicken legs - fresh $1.29lb/$2.84kg although this is $.29/lb more than last weeks price at SStore, this chicken is fresh and so you can portion it and freeze in the size that suits you.
Garden salad $1.00 (same as Safeway)
Coleslaw $1.00 (also same as Safeway)
Crusty buns $1.00/ package of 8. Not the best price, but they are nice for lunches.
Bulk weiners 6/$1.00
baby carrots $1.00/1 lb bag

Superstore
This week's feature: Free spiral ham. Spend $250.
So, if you want to consolidate all the above stores sales and get the ham, SStore matches prices.
CHEESE - here it is again if you missed last month. Bad timing, eh Pam? $7.98/907g Limit 4
Long English Cukes 3 for $2.58 ($.86 each)
Iceberg lettuce $.87
Navel oranges $.46/lb
Red Peppers 4/bag $1.98
Baby carrots $1.88/2lb bag
Green cabbage $.48/lb If you have a food processor, you can shred a whole head and make your own coleslaw for half the price.
PC pop 2L $.75
Boneless toupie style ham $1.78/lb or $.3.92/kg
Pork shoulder steaks $1.88/lb or $4.14/kg
Margarine, 1/4 lb squares 3/$7.00 ($2.33/box) Great for baking and lasts forever in your fridge
NN whole almonds $8.98/1kg bag. I don't know if this applies to slivered, or sliced though. This is cheaper than bulk
Pecan halves $12.48/1kg bag. Also cheaper than bulk. Keep your nuts in the freezer to maintain freshness if you don't use them often.
NN Baking crumbs (graham or chocolate) $1.98/400g
NN flour $5.48 Just keeps getting cheaper. I do believe the wheat "shortage" is over. Now you can restock your food storage.
Kleenex Cottonelle toilet paper $5.99/12 double rolls. This is more expensive than Royale, but I like it. It's very thick and so I believe you use less. My opinion.
NN facial tissues 136 sheets $3.98/package of 6 ($.66/box)

if my link doesn't work, Pam Liptak has the email

navel oranges $1.99 for 4lb bag

Hunt's Thick and Rich tomato sauce 398ml (small cans) $0.67 each, works out to a better unit price than the 798ml cans
Tuna $0.97 per can
Pampers large diaper box $37.97, works out to 16.7 cents per diaper for box shown in ad, I think anything less than 20cents is an okay deal.
Fruit Loops Jumbo $4.97 a box

JoAnn's Grocery Picks for the Week

Ok, I'm really late this week. So . . .fire me!!

Superstore: This week's feature is $25 gift card for purchases of at least $250.
Pork side ribs $1.78/lb ($3.92) My rule of thumb, is any pork cut is decently priced if under $2.00/lb
Suasage chubs (pepperoni, salami, summer sausage, etc) $1.98/500g. I usually buy the 1kg chub, but this is cheaper this time. Pam, if you want this for Thursday, I can pick it up and shred it for an easy topping.
Strawberries $3.88/2lbs. This is great timing for those bringing fruit on Thursday.
Broccoli $.97/bunch
Cantaloupe $1.47 Also great timing.
Mini cucumbers $2/5.00
Imperial Marg $2.94/1.36kg tub or quarter pound squares. This is my favorite tasting marg. and is well priced this week Limit of 4
Kelloggs jumbo cereal $5.98
Liquid hand soap pump $1.49 (340 - 500 mL)
French bread $.97
Frozen chicken legs $1.00/lb ($11.00/box) note that these are the full leg with back attached and are frozen in 2 bags. So you are getting 2 frozen lumps of legs, 5 lbs each. Keep that in mind if you have a smaller family, because it is virtually impossible to split them apart.
No Name soups 3/$1.00 (this includes the basic soups: Cr. Mush, Ch noodle, vegetable and tomato) Great addition to your food storage
PC Rich and Flaky crackers(similar to Ritz) $1.25/box
Parboiled rice - $5.00/4kg This is even better than last week's pick as works out to the equivalent of $22.50/18kg bag. It may also appeal more to smaller families. But remember that it will keep for at least a decade if stored properly.
NoName french fries $1.50/kg bag. If you are not picky about brand, this is a good deal.
Exact (generic) pads, liners and tampons $2.00/box May as well stock up.
Winter shovels, etc 50% off
Excercise equipment 75% off
Kids books 70% off
Secret deodorant $1.00 each Limit 6

Save-on:
Western Family canned veggies $7.99/case = $.67/can If you eat canned veggies, this is good and adds to your food storage.
Rice $6.99/8kg If parboiled is not your thing, this price is even better than superstore's. It works out to only $15.75/18kg. Cool.
Imperial Marg is essentially the same sale price as Superstore $2/6.00

Safeway:
If the frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts is your thing, the price is right at $26.36/4kg box
Long English cukes $.99 each
Spartan apples $.79/lb
Lucerne ice cream $3.99

So, two items of note this week:
1. Sale prices of other stores will be honored at Superstore, so if you want to take advantage of the $25 coupon offer, you can add the specials at the other stores.
2. Somewhere, I recall seeing milk for $3.97 4L jug. I have no idea where it was, or if it was only in my dreams, but if anyone else recalls that, please add your comment and let us know.

Thanks and I'll be back again next week.

Tomatoes $.87/lb
McCain pizza (Premiere or Toscano only) $2.99 Limit of 6
Bounty paper towels 15rolls $10.99 Limit of 6
Kraft salad dressing 414-475mL $1.87 Limit of 6 This works out to $15.85 for the gallon jug, but if you don't buy that large quantity normally, this is okay.
Oasis juice boxes 5pack $.99 limit of 6 This is 100% juice and not sugar-laden fruit "drink"
Mustard 500mL jar $1.00 (I buy by the gallon, so this is twice what I pay, but this is god for most of you.

Basmati rice (if this is more your style of rice) 4.54kg (10 lbs) $8.98
Cheerios $1.89 (small box though) limit 6
Pogo's (if you buy such junk food!) 10/box $4.99 For these and pizza pops, I base my price on $.50/each. Any higher and I consider them a waste of money, regardless of the convenience for those "I'm in a panic" days.
PineSol cleaner 1.41L $2.89
Mr. Clean 1.2L @.289

Everything for Kidz Sale

March 27 @ Notre Dame High School, 10am - 2 pm, basically a big garage sale for kids clothing and other items. People will rent tables to sell their stuff. Hopefully some good deals to be had.

Playgroup March 17.

I know this isn't about freebies or deals or whatnot but playgroup in 2 weeks is on March 17 - St. Patrick's Day!
I'm not Irish but I love a good mint chocolate something, so I will be bringing something green, minty and chocolatey to playgroup that day. I'll plan for about 20 kids since you never know how many will come.

Team effort

As I was wandering through Safeway this morning, wishing I had time to go to Save On too, I had a thought. Next month we should coordinate a little. I usually shop at superstore, so I generally don't need to buy 30-50$ worth of goods at other stores. But I like the sales. So, next month if we talk about which stores we are going to then if someone only wants what is on sale then we can arrange for someone else who was going anyway to pick it up. Does that make sense? I did pick up an extra 10kg of sugar for $8.06 today if anyone wants it and couldn't make it to Safeway.
What do you think?

Also, for the upcoming Birthday Party, I have been thinking about the food.
The plan is to have pizza. We have pizza night every Friday because I make it from scratch and it is healthier than what you can buy. So that is the vision I had in my mind when we decided on a menu. However, I didn't think about the logistics of that. This is where I need opinions Healthier or easier? If healthier then is there anyone out there willing to make a few pizza's? We probably need at least ten large cookie sheet sized, I can make 2-4. Or I can make all the shells and hand them out for people to top/cook/bring to the party. What do you think?
hope your day is great!
